Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance remained in October 2015 by registering an index of 118.4 points. The decrease in three components of LI were offset by the increase in Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (0.2%), Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (0.1%) and Number of New Companies Registered (0.1%). The annual change of LI rebounded to 0.3% in October 2015 from negative 0.4% in the previous month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, posted a growth of 0.7% in October 2015. The growth of CI was stimulated by Volume Index of Retail Trade (0.3%), Total Employment in Manufacturing sector and Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing sector which recorded 0.2%, respectively. The annual change of CI rose to 1.6% in the reference month as against 1.3% in the preceding month.

The annual change of LI and CI showed an improvement in October 2015 as compared to the previous month. The Diffusion Index for CI exceeded 50.0% for the first time since July 2015, while the LI continued below 50.0%. This scenario indicates that the Malaysian economy will expand at a slower rate in the near term.
