WHOLESALE   &   RETAIL   TRADE   MALAYSIA   STOOD   AT   RM108.1   BILLION   IN   SEPTEMBER   2021,  DIPPED   -2.6 PER CENT  

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales   value   of   Wholesale   &   Retail   Trade   recorded   RM108.1 billion  in  September  2021,  registered  a  growth  of   -2.6 per cent year-on-year. The   fall   was   contributed   by   Motor   Vehicles    sub-sector   -20.9  per  cent   and   Retail  Trade  -1.1 per cent. On the other hand, Wholesale Trade recorded a positive growth of  0.9 per cent.

In   terms   of   volume   index,  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade   registered  a  growth  of   -5.6  per  cent   year-on-year   to   record  123.3 points. The main sub-sector that contributed to the fall was Motor Vehicles with a decrease of  -25.9 per cent, Retail Trade  -2.8 per cent and Wholesale Trade  -2.7 per cent. However,  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  went  up   9.7 per cent  month-on-month in September 2021.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of  RM53.0 billion in September 2021 with a positive growth of  0.9 per cent as against September 2020. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Agricultural Raw Materials & Live Animals  8.6 per cent, Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco  6.3 per cent and Other Specialised Wholesale  3.7 per cent as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose  2.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  128.1 points, contracted  -2.7 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-17.2%), Wholesale of Household Goods (-7.6%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (-6.6%). On  the  other  hand,  seasonally   adjusted volume  index climbed up  1.7  per  cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of  -1.1 per cent as compared to September 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this decline were  Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-9.8%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-3.9%). Contrarily, sales of this sub-sector went up  4.6 per cent as compared with August 2021.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of  -2.8 per cent to  132.3 points as compared to September 2020. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-10.7%), Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-8.0%) and Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-2.1%). Conversely, seasonally adjusted volume index increased  8.4 per cent as against August 2021.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a growth of  -20.9 per cent year-on-year. This decrease was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles which registered a growth of  -28.4 per cent, Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles  -25.3 per cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories  -23.2 per cent. However, sales of this sub-sector surged  85.2 per cent month-on-month.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles slipped  -25.9 per cent year-on-year to reach  83.2 points. The decline was attributed to Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (-42.8%),  Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles (-30.4%) and Sale of  Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (-27.3%). On   the   other   hand,   seasonally   adjusted   volume   index   for   this   sub-sector   expanded   98.9 per cent month-on-month.
