WHOLESALE    &    RETAIL    TRADE    MALAYSIA    AGAIN    HIT    BY    COVID-19    PANDEMIC    TO    RECORD   RM92.2   BILLION   IN  JUNE   2021,   FELL -10.3 PER CENT WITH SALE OF MOTOR VEHICLES PLUMMETED -94.8 PER CENT AND SALES OF PETROL & DIESEL DROPPED -21.6 PER CENT

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM92.2 billion in June 2021, registered a negative growth of  10.3 per cent  year-on-year. The  fall  was   contributed  by  Motor  Vehicles  and  Retail  Trade which recorded a decline of  92.4 per cent and  2.9 per cent respectively. On the other hand, Wholesale Trade recorded a positive growth of  3.6 per cent.

In  terms  of  volume  index, Wholesale & Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  12.4 per cent year-on-year to record  106.6 points. The fall was attributed to the decrease of   92.8 per cent in Motor  Vehicles.  Retail  Trade  and   Wholesale  Trade  also  recorded  a  negative  growth   to   register   3.5  per  cent   and   0.1  per  cent    respectively.   As    for    seasonally  adjusted  volume  index,  it   went   down  17.5 per cent month-on-month in June 2021.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale  Trade  generated  sales  value  of  RM50.7  billion  in  June  2021,  increased  RM1.8 billion (3.6%)  as  against  June  2020. Other   Specialised    Wholesale    was    the    highest    contributor    with    an    increase    of    17.2  per  cent  and   Non-specialised   Wholesale   Trade  10.8 per cent as compared  to  the  previous  year. For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this sub-sector contracted  4.8 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  119.7 points, contracted  0.1 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Wholesale on  a  Fee    or  Contract  Basis (-22.6%), Wholesale  of  Household  Goods  (-6.6%)  and  Wholesale  of  Food,  Beverages & Tobacco (-4.2%) and  Wholesale  of  Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (-2.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased 5.2 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  2.9 per cent as compared to June 2020. Among  groups  that  contributed  to  this  decline  were  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  (-21.6%)  and  Retail  Sale  in  Non-specialised  Stores  (-7.2%). Compared with May 2021, sales of this sub-sector went down  6.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded negative  3.5 per cent  growth to  125.8 points as compared to June 2020. Among  the  groups  that  contributed  to  this  growth  were  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  (-33.1%)  and Retail  Sale  in Non-specialised Stores (-8.6%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it decreased  14.2 per cent as against May 2021.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered negative growth  92.4 per cent year-on-year. This decrease was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  -94.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector declined  92.0 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles slipped  92.8 per cent year-on-year to reach  7.5 points. The decrease was contributed by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle (-96.1%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles (-95.4%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector dropped  92.2 per cent month-on-month.
