Overview

Production of natural rubber decreased 39.2 per cent in May 2020

The monthly rubber census conducted for the reference month of May 2020 found that the implementation of the Movement Control Order (MCO) in that month still has an impact to the establishment that carries out rubber processing activities. Production of natural rubber decreased 39.2 per cent in May 2020 to 21,044 tonnes as compared to 34,616 tonnes in the previous month. Comparison year on year also showed the decrease of 52.7 per cent as compared to the same month in the previous year.

The decline in the production of natural rubber was also supported by the closing stocks in the previous month. This situation is among the remedial measures taken to address the shortage of production. Stocks of natural rubber started to decline in May 2020 by 8.2 per cent to 295,146 tonnes compared to 321,413 tonnes in April 2020.

Exports of Malaysia's natural rubber amounted 33,780 tonnes, decreased by 16.8 per cent against 40,596 tonnes in April 2020. The main natural rubber export destination is People’s Republic of China with a share of 50.4 per cent from total exports in May 2020 followed by Germany (13.4%), U.S.A (5.2%), Turkey (4.1%) and Egypt (2.5%). Rubber gloves remained the major export item with an export value in May 2020 was RM2.13 billion compared to RM1.98 billion in April 2020.

Average price of Latex Concentrate recorded an increase of 432.16 sen  per kilogramme as compared to April 2020 (413.26 sen per kilogramme). Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (S.M.R. 20) also increased to 476.13 sen per kilogramme as compared to 472.64 sen per kilogramme for the same period.

Total domestic consumption for natural rubber was 39,692 tonnes, increased 10.5 per cent as compared to the previous month. Rubber gloves industry dominates the use of natural rubber with 33,679 tonnes or 84.9 per cent  from the total domestic consumption.
