Production of natural rubber increased 0.3 per cent on April 2020
The Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry in its press release on 22 March 2020 stated that agricultural activities including the rubber industry were allowed to continue operating during the Movement Control Order. Monthly Rubber Census for April 2020 was conducted during this period.
Production of natural rubber increased 0.3 per cent in April 2020 to 34,616 tonnes as compared to the previous month (34,506 tonnes). Comparison year on year also showed an increase of 2.0 per cent as compared to the same month in the previous year.
Exports of Malaysia's natural rubber amounted 40,596 tonnes, decreased by 10.2 per cent against 45,198 tonnes in March 2020. The primary natural rubber export destination is People’s Republic of China with a share of 48.9 per cent from total exports in April 2020 followed by Germany (12.1%), U.S.A (6.2%), Iran (5.3%) and Taiwan (3.5%).
The highest exports were for glove items with RM1,984.4 million, an increase of 11.6 per cent as compared to March 2020. Malaysia exports the highest gloves to the United States with 97,905 tonnes in April 2020 compared to 24,737 tonnes in March 2020, an increase of 295.8 per cent, followed by People’s Republic of China (28.8%) and Germany (9.9%). The increase was driven by high demand due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stocks of natural rubber continuously increased by 0.5 per cent from 319,486 tonnes in March 2020 to 321,214 tonnes in April 2020.
Average price of Latex Concentrate recorded a decline of 413.26 sen per kilogramme as compared to March 2020 (435.66 sen per kilogramme). Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (S.M.R. 20) also dropped to 472.64 sen per kilogramme as compared to 517.45 sen per kilogramme for the same period.
Total domestic consumption for natural rubber was 39,208 tonnes, decreased 7.9 per cent as compared to the previous month. Rubber gloves industry dominates the use of natural rubber with 35,080 tonnes or 89.5 per cent from the total domestic consumption.
