Economic recovery remains in sight amid a likelihood to affect the pace of recovery
Malaysia’s LI for November 2020 registered 109.1 points, rose 7.1 per cent from November 2019 following 6.3 per cent in October 2020. Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index which remained to prop up significantly in the reference month was mainly fuelled by the Health Care Index. The trend is in line with the monthly change of LI which posted a growth of 0.4 per cent in November 2020 as against negative 0.7 per cent in the previous month. The gain was primarily contributed by Real Imports of Semi Conductors (0.5%) driven by the encouraging demand of electronic integrated circuit. In spite of a better performance of LI, the returned implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) in selected states to compromise between health and economy as well as the deployment of vaccine are posting uncertainty in the future. Thus, the LI is raising hope that economic recovery remains in sight amid a likelihood to affect the pace of recovery.
The Coincident Index (CI) which represents the current economic performance, increased 0.4 per cent to attain 112.4 points in the reference month from 112.0 points in October 2020. The main component that influenced the increase was Real Contributions to Employees Provident Fund (EPF) which registered 0.2 per cent. At the same time, the CI posted negative 2.3 per cent annual change in November 2020 from negative 2.4 per cent in the preceding month.
Six out of seven components of the Diffusion Index for LI showed an improvement as compared to the past six months by registering 85.7 per cent. While, the Diffusion Index for CI remained at 100.0 per cent since October 2020.
