Exports

On a-month-on-month basis, in October 2016, the export unit value index increased 1.6% to 106.8 points. This was led by mineral fuels (+5.6%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (+5.4%) and inedible crude materials (+2.1%). Similarly, the export volume index also recorded a marginal increase of 0.1% to 121.7 points. This was mainly attributed to inedible crude materials (+16.1%), beverages and tobacco (+4.4%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+3.7%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index decreased 3.6%.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and export volume index decreased 2.7% and 6.3% respectively.

 

Imports

In October 2016, the import unit value index registered an increase of 0.9% to 110.2 points which was attributed to mineral fuels (+3.3%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (+2.4%) and inedible crude materials (+1.8%). In contrast, the import volume index declined 2.6% to 122.5 points. This decrease was mainly led by mineral fuels (-9.2%) followed by chemicals (-8.1%) and manufactured goods (-7.0%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index dropped 7.2%.

On a-year-on-year basis, the import unit value index recorded the increase of 1.5% while the import volume index recorded a decrease of 8.0%.

 

Terms of trade

In October 2016, Malaysia’s terms of trade recorded an increase of 0.7% to 96.9 points when compared with the preceding month, while a reduction of 4.1% was recorded year-on-year.
