Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in March 2020, the export unit value index shrank 0.7% to 116.1 points which was attributed to the decrease in the index of mineral fuels (-5.8%) and animal & vegetable oils & fats (-1.1%). In contrast, the export volume index expanded 8.4% to 129.8 points. The expansion was led by the growth in the index of mineral fuels (+39.6%), inedible crude materials (+32.9%) and machinery & transport equipment (+11.1%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index declined 8.0% to 124.2 points.

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index rose 1.0% while the export volume index declined 5.6%.

Imports

In March 2020, the import unit value index recorded a decline of 0.4% to 116.2 points which was due to the decrease in the index of mineral fuels (-6.6%) and manufactured goods (-0.3%). While, the import volume index rose 10.1% to 132.6 points. This was contributed by the increase in the index of mineral fuels (+31.5%), food (+20.4%) and chemicals (+17.4%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in March 2020 dropped 1.4% to 134.8 points.

On a year-on-year basis, both the import unit value and volume indices decreased 0.6% and 2.1% respectively.

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade dropped 0.3% to 99.9 points when compared with February 2020. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade rose 1.6% from 98.3 points.
