Exports
The export unit value index declined 2.2 per cent in August 2022 as compared with the previous month, attributed to the decreases in the index of animals & vegetables oils & fats (-18.4%), mineral fuels (-1.5%) and manufactured goods (-0.6%). However, export volume index increased 7.7 per cent in the same month, contributed by the rises in the index of miscellaneous manufactured articles (+11.9%), machinery & transport equipment (+7.9%) and mineral fuels (+7.8%). The seasonally adjusted export volume index also increased 16.5 per cent in August 2022, from 162.1 points to 188.8 points.
On annual comparison, both export unit value and volume indices continued to grow 16.4 per cent and 27.4 per cent, respectively.
Imports
Import unit value index fell 1.9 per cent in August 2022 as compared with the previous month, attributed to the deterioration in the index of mineral fuels (-10.1%), animal & vegetables oils & fats (-4.2%) and chemicals (-0.4%). The import volume index increased 7.1 per cent in August 2022 as compared to the previous month, contributed by the rises in the index of mineral fuels (+27.3%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+9.4%) and machinery & transport equipment (+2.4%). The seasonally adjusted import volume index also increased by 9.1 per cent from 195.8 points to 213.7 points.
On a year-on-year basis, both the import unit value and volume indices rose 9.8 per cent and 52.7 per cent, respectively.
Terms of trade
Malaysia’s terms of trade eased in August 2022, fell by 0.2 per cent month-on-month to 111.9 points, contributed by the falls in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (-14.8%), manufactured goods (-0.5%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.1%). On a y-o-y basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade performance showed a positive growth of 6.0 per cent from 105.6 points in August of previous year.
