Exports

The export unit value index grew 4.7 per cent in March 2022 as compared with the previous month, supported by the increases in the index of mineral fuels (+17.1%), animal & vegetable & oil fats (+7.7%) and machinery & transport equipment (+1.1%). Meanwhile, the export volume index also grew 23.0 per cent in the same month, contributed by the increases in the index of machinery & transport equipment (+30.9%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+25.8%) and mineral fuels (+20.4%). The seasonally adjusted export volume index grew 6.3 per cent from 160.0 points to 170.1 points.

On annual comparison, both export unit value and volume index continued to expand 19.3 per cent and 5.1 per cent, respectively.

Imports

The import unit value index grew 2.3 per cent in March 2022 as compared with the previous month, contributed by the increase in the index of mineral fuels (+13.1%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (+3.7%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.8%). The import volume index also rose 24.5 per cent in March 2022 as compared to the previous month, attributed from the increases in the index of mineral fuels (+51.1%), manufactured goods (+24.1%) and machinery & transport equipment (+20.0%). The seasonally adjusted import volume index in March 2022 increased by 11.6 per cent from 170.2 points to 189.9 points.

On a year-on-year basis, both the import unit value and volume indices expanded 8.9 per cent and 19.3 per cent, respectively.

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade increased by 2.3 per cent month-on-month to 112.5 points in March 2022, attributed from the rises in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (+3.8%), mineral fuels (+3.5%) and chemicals (+0.8%). On a y-o-y basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade performance showed positive growth of 9.5 per cent from 102.8 points in March of previous year.
