Exports

On a month-on-month (m-o-m) basis, in August 2017, the export unit value index rose 0.4% to 111.8 points. This was mainly contributed by mineral fuels (+1.1%), manufactured goods (+1.0%) and chemicals (+0.6%). Meanwhile, the export volume index also increased 4.2% to 138.3 points which was led by machinery & transport equipment (+10.7%), inedible crude materials (+7.8%) and manufactured goods (+7.3%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index declined 2.6% to 134.2 points.

 

When compared to the previous year, the export unit value index and export volume index posted increases of 7.9% and 12.8% respectively.

 

Imports

In August 2017, the import unit value index grew 0.2% to 114.9 points, m-o-m, which was contributed by mineral fuels (+1.7%), manufactured goods (+0.4%) and chemicals (+0.3%). Meanwhile, the import volume index also increased 2.3% to 143.1 points. This increase was led by animal & vegetable oils & fats (+12.7%) followed by machinery & transport equipment (+7.5%) and chemicals (+5.8%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index rose 3.1% to 139.9 points.

 

On a year-on-year basis, the import unit value index and import volume index registered an increase of 5.9% and 15.7% respectively.

 

Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade recorded a rise of 0.2% to 97.2 points when compared with July 2017. Meanwhile, a rise of 1.9% was recorded year-on-year basis.
