Exports

On a month-on-month basis, in April 2020, the export unit value index shrank 1.7% to 114.1 points which was attributed to the decrease in the index of mineral fuels (-10.8%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (-5.2%) and inedible crude materials (-0.2%). Meanwhile, the export volume index also dropped 17.6% to 107.0 points which was led by the decline in the index of machinery & transport equipment (-26.5%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (-25.5%) and mineral fuels (-20.3%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the export volume index declined 14.4% to 106.4 points.

When compared to the previous year, both the export unit value and volume indices declined 0.6% and 23.3% respectively.

 

Imports

In April 2020, the import unit value index recorded a decline of 1.2% to 114.8 points which was due to the decrease in the index of mineral fuels (-14.0%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (-6.7%) and inedible crude materials (-0.3%). In contrast, the import volume index rose 2.2% to 135.6 points. This was contributed by the increase in the index of machinery & transport equipment (+34.3%). In seasonally adjusted terms, the import volume index in April 2020 rose 4.5% to 140.8 points.

On a year-on-year basis, both the import unit value and volume indices decreased 2.9% and 5.1% respectively.


 
Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade dropped 0.5% to 99.4 points as compared with March 2020. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysia’s terms of trade rose 2.4% from 97.1 points.
