Overview
The index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose 6.2 per cent to 153.1 points during the first quarter 2017 as compared to the same period in 2016. The growth was spurred by the increase in the Retail Trade (7.8%) subsector.
The seasonally adjusted index of Wholesale & Retail Trade edged up 1.0 per cent as against the fourth quarter 2016. The increase was mainly contributed by the Retail Trade subsector of 2.2 per cent.

Performance of Wholesale Trade Sub-sector
The index of Wholesale Trade went up 5.4 per cent to 160.2 points in the first quarter 2017 over the first quarter 2016. The increase was supported by Other Specialised Wholesale (9.0%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment and Supplies (6.3%).
Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector
In first quarter 2017, the Retail Trade sub-sector registered an increase of 7.8 per cent to 157.4 points year-on-year. The growth was driven by Retail Sale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco in Specialised Stores (10.4%), Retail Sale Via Stalls and Markets (9.9%) and Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores (8.9%).
Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector
The index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories posted a positive growth of 3.4 per cent to 124.0 points in the first quarter 2017 as against the same quarter 2016. This increase was led by Sale of Motor Vehicles and Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles which registered the same growth of 3.4 per cent.
