HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at RM94.4 billion in December 2016, registering  7.6 per cent growth as compared to the corresponding period in 2015. The sales value consists of Wholesale Trade (RM45.7 billion), Retail Trade (RM36.1 billion) and Motor Vehicles (RM12.5 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade (9.7%) and Wholesale Trade (8.0%) businesses.

The index of Wholesale & Retail Trade which measures the volume changes rose by 6.5 per cent in December 2016 as compared to December 2015. The growth was led by Retail Trade (8.4%) and Wholesale Trade (6.7%). The seasonally adjusted index of  Wholesale & Retail Trade increased by 1.9 per cent as compared to the preceding month.

Wholesale Trade Business

Sales value of Wholesale Trade business registered 8.0 per cent growth to RM45.7 billion as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. On a monthly basis, sales value of this business increased by  4.9 per cent.

The index of Wholesale Trade grew by 6.7 per cent in December 2016 as compared to December 2015. Month-on-month, the index of Wholesale Trade (seasonally adjusted) increased by 1.6 per cent as against the previous month.

Retail Trade Business

Retail Trade business recorded an increase in sales value of RM3.2 billion or 9.7 per cent as compared to last year. Month-on-month, this business rose by 4.9 per cent.

The index of Retail Trade rose by 8.4 per cent in December 2016 as compared to the same month a year earlier. Compared to the previous month, the seasonally adjusted index of Retail Trade edged up by  0.9 per cent. 

Motor Vehicles Trade Business

In this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business increased to RM12.5 billion or 0.5 per cent as compared to the same month of the preceding year. On a monthly basis, sales value of Motor Vehicles business increased to   7.4 per cent.

Year-on-year, the index of Motor Vehicles decreased to   -0.3 per cent in December 2016. The seasonally adjusted index of Motor Vehicles went up by 4.8 per cent in December 2016 as against November 2016.
