Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) rebounded to 2.5 per cent in September 2021

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased 2.5 per cent in September 2021 as compared to the same month of the previous year. The expansion of IPI was attributed by the increment of 4.0 per cent in Manufacturing index and 0.4 per cent in Electricity index. Meanwhile, Mining index recorded a downturn of 3.0 per cent.

The Manufacturing sector output based on year-on-year comparison increased by 4.0 per cent in September 2021 after recording a positive growth of 0.6 per cent in August 2021. The main subsectors contributed to the growth in Manufacturing sector in September 2021 were Electrical & Electronics Products (12.3%), Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber & Plastic Products (6.1%) and Food, Beverages & Tobacco (2.1%). Export-oriented industries grew 6.7 per cent while domestic-oriented industries shrank by 1.9 per cent.

The Mining sector output declined 3.0 per cent in September 2021 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The deterioration was contributed by the fall of 7.7 per cent in Crude Oil & Condensate index. Meanwhile, Natural Gas index augmented by 1.0 per cent. The Electricity sector output rose 0.4 per cent in September 2021 as compared to the same month last year.

The IPI for the third quarter 2021 deteriorated 1.1 per cent as compared to the same period of the previous year. The decline was affected by Electricity, Mining and Manufacturing indices, with the fall of 3.1 per cent, 2.2 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively.
