WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE MALAYSIA RECORDS RM110.5 BILLION
IN OCTOBER 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade  recorded  RM110.5  billion  in  October  2020  to  register  -0.8 per cent  year-on-year. This  was  due  to  Retail  Trade  which  contracted  1.5 per cent (-RM0.7 billion). Similarly, Wholesale Trade also recorded a decrease of  0.9 per cent (-RM0.5 billion). On  the  other  hand,  Motor  Vehicles  continued  a  positive  growth  of   2.2 per cent or an increase of  RM0.3 billion.

In  October  2020, volume  index  of  Wholesale  &  Retail Trade registered a growth of   -1.4 per cent year-on-year to record  130.3 points. The fall was due to Retail Trade and Wholesale Trade which decreased  2.8 per cent and  0.8 per cent respectively. In  contrast,  Motor  Vehicles  recorded  a  positive  growth  to  register  1.7 per cent. In  terms  of  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index, it  went down  1.4 per cent month-on-month.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM53.4 billion in October 2020, a decrease of RM0.5 billion (-0.9%) as against October 2019. Other Specialised Wholesale  and  Wholesale  on  a  Fee  or  Contract  Basis  recorded  a  fall of  6.1 per cent  and  3.6 per cent respectively as compared to the previous year. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector rose  1.7 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  133.5 points, contracted  0.8 per cent year-on-year. The negative growth was recorded in Other Specialised Wholesale (-5.5%) and Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-3.5%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  2.2 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  1.5 per cent as compared to October 2019. Among groups that contributed to this decrement were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-9.6%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-7.4%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-4.6%). Compared with September 2020, sales of this sub-sector decreased  1.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  -2.8 per cent growth to 135.6 points as compared to October 2019. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-8.4%), Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (-8.3%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-4.8%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it edged down  3.6 per cent as against September 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered year-on-year growth of  2.2 per cent. This increase was attributed to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  6.4 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycle 4.7 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector decreased  5.8 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles grew  1.7 per cent year-on-year to reach  105.4 points. The increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (9.2%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (1.3%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector declined  8.7 per cent month-on-month.
