SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM111.8 BILLION
IN NOVEMBER 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

A total of RM111.8 billion was recorded by sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in November  2019, an increase of  RM5.6 billion or  5.3 per cent  as  compared  to  the  same  month  a  year  ago. The   growth   was   attributed   to   Retail   Trade   which  increased  RM3.0 billion  (+7.0%). Similarly,   Wholesale   Trade   and   Motor   Vehicles   rose  RM2.2 billion (+4.3%)  and  RM0.4 billion (+3.0%) respectively.

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade posted a growth of  5.6 per cent to reach  131.4 points as compared to the same month of the previous year. The key contributor for this growth was Retail Trade with  6.9 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  1.1 per cent as against a month ago.

For performance across sub-sector, Retail Trade led the other sub-sectors with year-on-year growth of  7.0 per cent. Within the same period, Wholesale Trade expanded  4.3 per cent, while Motor Vehicles rose  3.0 per cent.

The growth of  5.6 per cent (year-on-year) in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was driven by Retail Trade ( 6.9%). This was followed by Wholesale Trade (4.8%) and Motor Vehicles (3.1%).

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM53.2 billion in November  2019, increased RM2.2 billion (4.3%) as against the corresponding month of the previous year. The expansion was supported by Wholesale of Household Goods ( 5.6%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco ( 5.5%), Wholesale on A Fee or Contract Basis (5.0%), and Other Specialised Wholesale (4.9%). For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector declined 1.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade expanded  4.8 per cent to  129.2 points in November  2019 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Wholesale on A Fee or Contract Basis recorded the highest growth of  6.4 per cent. This was followed by Wholesale of Household Goods (6.2%) and Other Specialised Wholesale (5.9%). For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector edged up  0.5 per cent.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered an annual growth of  7.0 per cent as compared to November  2018. The expansion was fueled by Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores and Retail Sale Via Stalls & Market which recorded  8.6 per cent respectively. This was followed by Retail Sale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco in Specialised Stores ( 8.4%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (8.3%) and Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets ( 8.2%).

Retail Trade rose  6.9 per cent to  143.2 points in November  2019. Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores recorded a growth of  8.4 per cent. This was followed by Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores and Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets which registered  8.2 per cent and  7.6 per cent respectively. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  1.4 per cent as against October 2019.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles went up  3.0 per cent as against the corresponding period of the previous year. The increment was supported by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with  4.5 per cent, Sales of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories (4.0%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (3.7%). Compared to October  2019, sales value increased at a slower pace of  0.5 per cent.

As for volume index, it rose  3.1 per cent to  105.1 points compared to a year ago. The  rise  was  propelled  by  Sale  of  Motor  Vehicle  Parts  &  Accessories  with  4.3 per cent  and Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with  3.3 per cent in November 2019. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index increased  0.2 per cent.
