SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE MALAYSIA
CONTINUE RECOVERY IN JULY 2020

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded RM108.7 billion in July 2020, contracted  3.5 per cent as compared with the same period last year. This was the highest sales value during Movement Control Order due to Covid-19. Motor Vehicles rebounded  1.7 per cent or an increase of  RM0.2 billion. On  the   other   hand,  Wholesale   Trade   and   Retail   Trade   continued   to   register   a   negative   growth   of  -4.5 per cent  (-RM2.4 billion) and  -3.5 per cent (-RM1.8 billion) respectively.

In  July  2020, volume  index  of  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  has  started  showing  signs  of  recovery. This index registered  127.7 points, recorded an annual growth of   -3.9 per cent. This was the smallest negative growth since March 2020. Motor Vehicles  recorded a positive growth of  1.8 per cent. Contrarily, Wholesale Trade declined  -4.0 per cent. Retail Trade also went down  -5.2 per cent within the same period. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  6.5 per cent in this month.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of  RM50.0 billion in July 2020, a decrease of  RM2.4 billion (-4.5%) as against July 2019. Other Specialised Wholesale, Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis and  Wholesale  of  Machinery,  Equipment  &  Supplies  recorded  a  fall  of  15.3 per cent, 8.9 per cent and  1.1 per cent  respectively   as   compared   to   the   previous   year. For   monthly   comparison,  sales  of  this  sub-sector increased  2.2 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered  121.5 points, contracted  4.0 per cent as compared to the same month of the previous year. The negative growth was recorded in Other Specialised Wholesale (-14.3%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis (-7.9%) and Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (-0.9%). As  for  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index,  it  went  up  5.1 per cent as against June 2020.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a negative growth of  3.8 per cent as compared to July 2019. Among groups that contributed to this fall were Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-10.8%), Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-10.5%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment  in  Specialised  Stores  (-8.5%). Compared  with  June  2020,  sales  of  this sub-sector  rose  7.1 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded  -5.2 per cent growth to  138.8 points as compared to July 2019. In line with the sales value, the largest decline was depicted in Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (-11.8%), Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores (-11.3%) and Retail Sale of Other Household Equipment in Specialised Stores (-9.1%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose  6.2 per cent as against June 2020.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles registered year-on-year growth of  1.7 per cent, rebounded from  -4.5 per cent in June 2020. This increase was due to Sale of Motor Vehicles which registered a growth of  5.8 per cent and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles  2.8 per cent. For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector grew  14.3 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles grew  1.8 per cent year-on-year to reach  116.5 points. The highest increment was contributed by Sale of Motor Vehicles (7.6%) and Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (2.6%). Seasonally adjusted volume index for this sub-sector expanded  8.3 per cent as compared to June 2020.
