HIGHLIGHTS

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose  7.4  per  cent to  163.4  points in January 2018 as compared to January 2017. The growth was  supported by the increase in Retail Trade (8.5%) and Wholesale Trade (8.0%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased by  0.7  per  cent as compared to the preceding month.

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at  RM101.1  billion, increased  8.1  per  cent in January 2018 as compared to the corresponding period in 2017. The sales value consists of Wholesale Trade  (RM49.8 billion), Retail Trade  (RM39.6 billion) and Motor Vehicles  (RM11.7 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade (9.9%) business.

Wholesale Trade Business

Volume  index  of  Wholesale  Trade  grew   8.0   per  cent  to  172.7  points  in  January  2018  as  compared  to  January 2017. Month-on-month basis, this volume index (seasonally adjusted) recorded positive growth  0.7  per  cent as against the previous month.

Sales  value  of  Wholesale  Trade  business   registered   7.9   per  cent  growth  to   RM49.8  billion  as  compared  to  the  corresponding month of the previous year. Month-on-month basis, this business increased  0.6  per  cent.

Retail Trade Business

Volume index of Retail Trade rose  8.5  per  cent to  169.0  points in January 2018 as compared to the same month of previous year. Compared to December 2017, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade increased by  0.8  per  cent.

Retail  Trade  business  recorded  an  increase  in  sales  value  to  RM39.6  billion  or  9.9  per  cent  as  compared  to  last year. Month-on-month, sales value of this business registered negative growth  0.2  per  cent.

Motor Vehicles Business

Year-on-year, volume index of Motor Vehicles recorded positive growth  1.5 per  cent to  124.7  points in January 2018. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Motor Vehicles increased 1.8 per cent in January 2018 as against December 2017.

For this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business recorded  3.0  per  cent growth to  RM11.7  billion as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Sales value of Motor Vehicles business registered negative growth  3.0  per  cent as compared to the previous month.
