HIGHLIGHTS

Volume index of  Wholesale &  Retail  Trade rose  5.3 per cent to  158.3 points in September 2017 as compared to September 2016. The growth was supported by the increase in Wholesale Trade  (7.0%)  and  Retail Trade ( 6.7%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade registered  negative growth   1.2 per cent as compared to the preceding month.

Sales  value of Wholesale & Retail  Trade   stood  at    RM97.8 billion (7.6%) in September 2017  as  compared   to    the  corresponding    period    in    2016.     The    sales   value   consists    of   Wholesale  Trade  ( RM49.3  billion) ,   Retail   Trade    (RM37.3 billion) and Motor Vehicles (RM11.3 billion) businesses.The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade ( 9.6%) and Wholesale Trade (9.3%).

Wholesale Trade Business

Volume  index  of  Wholesale  Trade    grew   7.0  per  cent  to   177.6  points   in   September  2017  as  compared   to  September   2016.   Month-on-month basis,  this volume index  (seasonally adjusted) recorded negative growth  2.0 per cent as against the previous month.

Sales value of Wholesale Trade business registered 9.3 per cent growth to RM49.3 billion as compared   to  the  corresponding  month of the previous year. Month-on-month basis, sales value of this business increased  3.9 per cent.

Retail Trade Business

Volume index of Retail Trade rose  6.7 per cent to  154.2 points in September 2017 as compared to the same month of previous year. Compared to August 2017, seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade recorded negative growth  2.9 per cent.

Retail    Trade   business   recorded   an   increase  in   sales  value  to   RM37.3 billion  or  9.6  per  cent  as  compared   to   last  year.   Month-on-month,  this business registered negative growth  1.5 per cent.

Motor Vehicles Business

Year-on-year, volume index of Motor Vehicles recorded negative growth  5.6 per cent to  118.0 points in September 2017. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Motor Vehicles dropped  6.9 per cent in September 2017 as against August 2017.

For this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business registered negative growth  5.0 per cent to  RM11.3 billion  as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Sales value of Motor Vehicles business recorded negative growth  7.4 per cent as compared to the previous month.
