Overview

In overall year of 2020, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded  -6.2 per cent to 121.5 points. In the fourth quarter of 2020, volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased 1.4 per cent to  register 131.2 points as compared to third quarter of 2020. As for year-on-year comparison, volume index improved to record  -1.2 per cent from -2.0 per cent in third quarter of 2020.

Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade grew  1.3 per cent  as against  the  third quarter of 2020.  This  growth  was underpinned  by Wholesale Trade sub-sector with 4.0 per cent and Retail Trade of 0.2 per cent. However, Motor vehicles sub-sector decreased  -2.9 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

Volume index of Wholesale Trade increased 3.5 per cent as compared to third quarter of the same year. The growth was attributed to Other Specialised Wholesale and Wholesale of Household Goods which registered  9.8 per cent and 4.6 per cent respectively. For year-on-year growth, volume index of Wholesale Trade declined  -0.4 per cent.

Retail Trade Sub-sector

For the fourth quarter of 2020, Retail Trade recorded 1.4 per cent growth as against the previous quarter, pushed up by Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores with  10.8 per cent. This was followed by Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets which registered  9.2 per cent. For year-on-year comparison, volume index slipped -2.9 per cent in fourth quarter of 2020.

Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

Volume index of Motor Vehicles posted a negative growth of  6.1 per cent quarter-on-quarter in fourth quarter of 2020. This fall was attributed to Sales of Motor Vehicles which decreased  9.4 per cent followed by Maintenance & Repair of Motor Vehicles with -7.0 per cent.  For performance of this sub-sector as againts the same quarter of the previous year, it went up  2.7 per cent.
