Overview

The index of Wholesale & Retail Trade posted an increase of   6.6 per cent in the third quarter  2016 as compared to the same period  in  2015.  The  growth was  primarily  driven  by  the  Wholesale  Trade and Retail Trade sub-sectors which increased by 9.1 per cent and  7.7 per cent respectively. The Motor Vehicles sub-sector dropped to  -2.9 per cent.

The seasonally adjusted Index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose by  1.2 per cent as against the second quarter 2016. The increase was contributed by the Wholesale Trade  (2.5%), Retail Trade  (0.8%) and Motor Vehicles  (0.4%) sub-sectors.

Performance of Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

The index of Wholesale Trade increased by  9.1 per cent in the third quarter 2016 over the third quarter 2015. The increase was   impelled   by  Other  Specialised   Wholesale   (17.6%),   Wholesale   of   Machinery,   Equipment  and  Supplies  (8.2%) and  Non-specialised Wholesale Trade  (6.3%).

Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector

In the third quarter 2016, the Retail Trade sub-sector recorded a growth of   7.7 per cent year-on-year. The growth was bolstered by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores  (17.9%), Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets  (9.5%) and Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores   (9.3%).

Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

The index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories slumped to   -2.9 per cent in the third quarter 2016 as against the same quarter 2015. The decrease was due to the decline in Sale of Motor Vehicles  (-7.4%) and Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motorcycles and Related Parts and Accessories   (-2.5%).
