Wholesale & Retail Trade

Overview

The Index of Distributive Trade increased by 5.1 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 as compared with the same period in 2015. The growth was impelled by the increase in Wholesale Trade (8.0%) and Retail Trade (5.5%) sub-sectors. The Motor Vehicles sub-sector decreased by 5.0 per cent.

 

The seasonally adjusted Index of Distributive Trade rose 1.1 per cent as againts the fourth quarter of 2015. The increase was led by Retail Trade (3.5%) and Wholesale Trade (1.6%) sub-sectors.

Performance of Wholesale Trade Sub-sector

The index of Wholesale Trade recorded an increase of  8.0 per cent in the first quarter 2016 over the first quarter 2015. The increase was supported by Other Specialised Wholesale  (18.6%), Wholesale on a Fee or Contract Basis  (5.0%) and Wholesale of Food, Beverages and Tobacco  (4.3%).

 

Performance of Retail Trade Sub-sector

In the first quarter of 2016, the Retail Trade sub-sector grew by  5.5 per cent year-on-year. The growth was contributed by Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores  (16.4%), Retail Sale of Cultural and Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores  (8.3%) and Retail Sale of Information and Communications Equipment in Specialised Stores  (6.7%).

 

Performance of Motor Vehicles Sub-sector

The index of Motor Vehicles which includes Parts and Accessories fell to negative  5.0 per cent in the first quarter of 2016 as compared to the same quarter of 2015. The decrease was contributed by Sale, Maintenance and Repair of Motorcycles and Related Parts and Accessories  (-9.2%), Maintenance and Repair of Motor Vehicles  (-6.4%) and Sale of Motor Vehicles  (-6.1%).

 

Updating the  Index of Distributive Trade Basket

Commencing first quarter 2016, the Index of Distributive Trade uses the industry coverage and weights that has been updated based on the Census of Distributive Trade 2014 (reference year 2013). Updating of the industry coverage and weights aims to represent the latest structure of the Distributive Trade industry. For further details, please refer to the technical note in this publication.

Data for first quarter 2016 is provisional. The data will be updated based on the latest available figures and subsequently published in the publication second quarter 2016.
