Wholesale & Retail Trade

Overview

The Department of Statistics, Malaysia has conducted Census of Distributive Trade in 2014 for reference year 2013. The census covered 370,725 registered establishments engaged in the wholesale trade, retail trade and motor vehicle activities. The report was published in April 2015. For the first time, Census of Distributive Trade Report by State, 2014 was published. This report contains information at administrative district level.

The main findings of this report are as follows:

In 2013, the Petaling District registered the highest number of establishments for distributive trade activities in Malaysia. There were 30,332 establishments of which 20,659 establishments or 68.1% were in the retail trade sub-sector. Meanwhile, 18.3% or 5,544 establishments were engaged in wholesale trade sub-sector and 4,129 establishments or 13.6% in motor vehicles sub-sector. 
 

Petaling District generated the highest sales value of goods and services of RM156.2 billion. From the total sales value of goods and services, wholesale trade sub-sector contributed 55.4% or RM86.5 billion, followed by the retail trade sub-sector, 30.2% or RM47.1 billion and motor vehicles sub-sector, 14.4% or RM22.6 billion.

   
In 2013, Petaling District also engaged the highest number of employees in the distributive trade sector. There were 180,691 persons. The majority of workers were employed in the retail trade sub-sector was 53.4% and followed by the wholesale trade sub-sector, 29.8% and motor vehicles sub-sector, 16.8%.
   

Total salaries and wages disbursed in Petaling District was RM6.1 billion. Retail trade sub-sector paid the highest salaries and wages paid with RM2.9 billion, followed by wholesale trade sub-sector, RM2.4 billion and motor vehicles sub-sector, RM882.3 million.
