MALAYSIA’S AFFILIATES ABROAD IN 2017 RECORDED A TURNOVER OF RM324.2 BILLION

In 2017, Malaysian affiliates abroad generated a turnover of RM324.2 billion as compared to RM281.0 billion in 2013 with an average annual increase of 3.3 per cent over the five years period. There were 2,180 number of Malaysian affiliates abroad as at 2017.

The increase in the turnover was largely supported by Services sector at RM203.4 billion contributed 62.7 per cent. Wholesale & retail trade, Financial and Information & communication were the major activities attributed to the turnover in Services sector. Manufacturing sector was the second highest contributor with a share of 23.9 per cent or RM77.4 billion. More than fifty per cent of total turnover of this sector was mainly from the Manufacture of Refined petroleum products and Manufacture of Vegetable & animal oils & fats. The turnover of Mining & quarrying and Agriculture sectors were RM25.6 billion and RM11.6 billion respectively, while Construction logged the smallest turnover of RM6.2 billion. 

The highest turnover was from affiliates located in Indonesia which accounted for RM48.5 billion mostly in Financial and Information & communication activities. The second and third largest turnover were from United Kingdom valued at RM37.3 billion largely in Wholesale & retail trade activity and Singapore at RM36.6 billion mainly in Utilities and Wholesale & retail trade activities.

A total of 402,840 persons were employed by Malaysian affiliates abroad mainly in Services and Agriculture sectors. Affiliates from Indonesia, China and Singapore recorded the largest number of employees. Meanwhile, Malaysian affiliates abroad paid a total of RM22.0 billion as compensation of employees particularly in Financial and Wholesale & retail trade activities.
