Overview

Malaysia’s DIA flows in 2020 declined while the accumulated investment overseas improved to RM518.8 billion

 

Malaysia’s DIA recorded an outflow of RM11.9 billion owing to lower investment precisely in Mining and Services sectors. Canada became the top DIA country in 2020 particularly in investment related to oil and gas industry. As at end 2020, DIA position increased to RM518.8 billion while income registered a value of RM18.4 billion.

Services remained as a vital sector to DIA, contributing 54.0 per cent of the total investment, primarily in financial and telecommunication activities. This was followed by the Manufacturing sector mainly in Food & beverages, and Petroleum, chemical, rubber & plastic products. Canada, United Kingdom and Indonesia were the main destinations of DIA flows in 2020.

Overall, the accumulated investment overseas improved to RM518.8 billion mostly in Services sector, followed by Mining & quarrying and Agriculture sectors. These DIA position were mainly channelled to Singapore and Indonesia while the United Kingdom overtook the Cayman Islands as the third top destination. 

In terms of income, DIA register a value of RM18.4 billion and mainly driven by Services sector with 71.4 per cent of total income, particularly in financial activities.
