Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) ) increased by 3.1 per cent in March 2018

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased by 3.1 per cent in March 2018 as compared with the same month of the previous year. The increase in March 2018 was supported by the growth in Manufacturing index (4.1%) and the Electricity index (4.4%). Meanwhile, the Mining index recorded zero growth in March 2018 compared to the same period of the previous year.

The Manufacturing sector output recorded an increase of 4.1 per cent in March 2018 after recording a growth of 4.7 per cent in February 2018. The major sub-sectors which registered increases in March 2018 were: Electrical and Electronic Equipment Products (5.8%), Food, Beverages and Tobacco Products (6.0%), and Non-Metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metals and Fabricated Metal Products (4.5%).

The Mining sector output recorded zero growth in March 2018 compared to the same period of the previous year (February 2018: -1.6%). This was due to the marginal increase in Crude Oil index (1.1%). Meanwhile, Natural Gas index decreased by 0.9 per cent.

The Electricity output recorded an increase of  4.4 per cent in March 2018 after recording an increase of 2.8 per cent in February 2018.

The IPI series from reference month January 2015 onwards are using base year 2015. Previously published IPI will be revised in line with the base year 2015.   For further details, please refer to the technical note attached.

       Data for March 2018 is provisional. The data will be updated based on the latest available figures and subsequently published in the April 2018 publication.
