Malaysia’s Industrial Production Index (IPI) increased by 3.2 per cent in January 2019

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) in January 2019 rose by 3.2 per cent as compared to the same month in the previous year. The growth in January 2019 was supported by the increase in the index of Electricity (7.8%) and Manufacturing (4.2%). Meanwhile the index of Mining recorded a decline of 0.9 per cent. The IPI in December 2018  remained at 3.4 per cent year-on-year.

The Manufacturing sector index increased by 4.2 per cent in January 2019 on a year-on-year basis after recording a growth of 4.4 per cent in December 2018. The major sub-sectors which contributed to the increase in January 2019 were Non-Metallic Mineral Products, Basic Metal & Fabricated Metal Products (4.3%), Petroleum, Chemical, Rubber and Plastic Products (4.0%) and Electrical and Electronic Equipment Products (3.9%).

The Mining sector index recorded a decline of  0.9 per cent in January 2019 as compared to the same period of the previous year. The decline was due to the decrease in the Crude Oil Index (-2.2%). Meanwhile the Natural Gas index increased by 0.3 per cent year-on-year.

The Electricity sector index increased by 7.8 per cent in January 2019 compared to January 2018.
