Household gross income
In 2022, monthly median household income in Malaysia was RM6,338 while the mean income was RM8,479. In terms of growth, median income increased by 2.5 per cent annually in 2022 as compared to 3.9 per cent in 2019. Meanwhile income rose by 2.4 per cent as compared to 4.2 per cent in 2019.
Household gross income by strata
Median household income in urban recorded an increase of 3.3 per cent from RM6,561 in 2019 to RM7,243 in 2022. Similarly, median household income in rural area increased at a rate of 2.2 per cent from RM3,828 to RM4,094. Mean household income in urban recorded a growth 2.9 per cent from RM8,635 (2019) to RM9,428 (2022). Meanwhile in the rural, mean household income was RM5,147 as compared to RM5,004 (2019) with a growth rate of 0.9 per cent.
Household gross income by ethnic
Median income of the Chinese was higher than the other ethnic groups with a monthly income of RM8,167, while Indians and Bumiputera recorded a median income of RM6,627 and RM5,793, respectively. In terms of mean income, Chinese also recorded the highest of RM10,656 per month. This was followed by Indians with monthly mean income of RM8,950 and Bumiputera at RM7,599. The mean income growth with the highest increase was recorded by Indians with 2.9 per cent, followed by Chinese (2.5%) and Bumiputera (2.3%).
Household gross income by state
W.P. Kuala Lumpur recorded the highest monthly median gross income of RM10,234, followed by W.P. Putrajaya (RM10,056), Selangor (RM9,983), W.P. Labuan (RM6,904), Johor (RM6,879) and Pulau Pinang (RM6,502). In terms of mean income, W.P. Putrajaya recorded the highest monthly mean gross income of RM13,473, followed by W.P. Kuala Lumpur (RM13,325), Selangor (RM12,233) and Johor (RM8,517). Selangor had the highest annual growth rate of median and mean income, which were 6.5 per cent and 4.1 per cent over respectively the period of 2019 to 2022.
