Overview

Export & Import Unit Value Indices increased marginally in June 2023
by 0.1 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively


Exports

The export unit value index increased marginally by 0.1 per cent in June 2023 compared to the previous month, led by the increase in the index of food (+1.4%), machinery & transport equipment (+1.2%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.7%). In addition, the export volume index remained on the upward trend by 3.7 per cent in the same month, in line with the increase in the index of machinery & transport equipment (+12.6%), manufactured goods (+10.6%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+2.6%). The seasonally adjusted export volume index declined 7.3 per cent from 170.1 points to 157.7 points.

Referring to the annual comparison, the export unit value index decreased by 4.9 per cent while the export volume index fell by 9.6 per cent.


Imports

The import unit value index also increased by 0.4 per cent in June 2023, attributed from the increase in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (+1.7%), machinery & transport equipment (+1.5%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+0.2%). Meanwhile, the import volume index declined 5.8 per cent in June 2023 compared to the previous month, contributed by the fall in the index of chemicals (-12.2%), manufactured goods (-11.1%) and machinery & transport equipment (-7.2%).The seasonally adjusted import volume index also fell 6.5 per cent from 186.5 points to 174.3 points.

A year-on-year comparison showed that the import unit value index decreased by 4.7 per cent while the import volume index decreased by 14.8 per cent.


Terms of trade

Malaysia’s terms of trade fell 0.4 per cent month-on-month to 110.4 points in June 2023, driven by the fall in the index of animal & vegetable oils & fats (-5.5%), mineral fuels (-1.3%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.3%). Malaysia’s terms of trade shrank by 0.3 per cent year-on-year from 110.7 points in June of the previous year.
