SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM115.9 BILLION
IN DECEMBER 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

A total of RM115.9 billion was recorded by sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade in December  2019, an increase of  RM6.6 billion or  6.0 per cent as compared to the   same  month  a  year  ago. The  growth   was   attributed   to   Retail  Trade  which  increased  RM3.1 billion  (+7.0%).   Similarly,   Wholesale   Trade   and   Motor   Vehicles   rose   RM2.9 billion  (+5.5%)  and  RM0.5 billion (+4.5%) respectively.

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade posted a growth of  6.0 per cent to reach  134.7 points as compared to the same month of the previous year. The key contributor for this growth was Retail Trade with 7.0 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  0.02 per cent as against a month ago.

For performance across sub-sector, Retail Trade led the other sub-sectors with year-on-year growth of  7.0 per cent. Within the same period, Wholesale Trade expanded  5.5 per cent, while Motor Vehicles rose 4.5 per cent.

The growth of 6.0 per cent (year-on-year) in the volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade was driven by Retail Trade (7.0%). This was followed by Wholesale Trade (5.4%) and Motor Vehicles (4.4%).

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of RM55.7 billion in December  2019, increased RM2.9 billion (5.5%) as against the corresponding month of the previous year. The expansion was supported by Other Specialised Wholesale (6.9%), Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (6.5%), Wholesale of Household Goods (6.3%) and Non-specialised Wholesale Trade (5.5%). For monthly comparison, sales of this sub-sector increased  4.5 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade expanded  5.4 per cent to  131.4 points in December  2019 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Wholesale of Household Goods recorded the highest growth of  7.3 per cent. This was followed by Other Specialised Wholesale (7.1%) and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco  (5.8%). For  monthly  comparison,  seasonally adjusted volume index of this sub-sector edged up  0.2 per cent.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered an annual growth of  7.0 per cent as compared to December 2018. The expansion was fueled by  Retail Trade Not  in  Stores, Stalls  or  Markets  (9.2%), Retail  Sale  Via  Stalls  &  Markets ( 8.9%),  Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (8.8%), Retail  Sale  of  Food, Beverages  &   Tobacco   in   Specialised   Stores   (8.6%),   Retail   Sale   in   Non-specialised Stores (8.5%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (7.0%). 

Within the same period, volume index of Retail  Trade  rose 7.0 per cent  to 149.6 points  in  December  2019.  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  recorded  a  growth  of  9.0 per cent. This was followed by Retail Trade Not in Stores, Stalls or Markets which registered  8.9 per cent and Retail Sale of Other Goods in Specialised Stores of  8.6 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it increased  0.5 per cent as against November 2019.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles went up  4.5 per cent as against the corresponding period of the previous year. The increment was supported by Sale, Maintenance & Repair of Motorcycles (4.8%) and Sales of Motor Vehicles (4.7%). Compared to November 2019, sales value decreased  1.7 per cent.

As for volume index, it rose  4.4 per cent to  102.8 points compared to a year ago. The rise was propelled by Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories and Sales of Motor Vehicles which recorded  4.9 per cent respectively in December 2019. For monthly comparison, seasonally adjusted volume index decreased  3.0 per cent.
