MALAYSIAN AFFILIATES ABROAD REGISTERED HIGHER TURNOVER OF RM335.2 BILLION IN 2019 

The performance of Malaysian affiliates abroad (with more than fifty per cent of ownership) have continued its upward momentum in 2019 when viewed with several indicators. Compared with a year ago, the turnover of these affiliates climbed 1.3 per cent to record RM335.2 billion. These affiliates had employed 412,937 persons as compared to 408,807 persons in 2018. At the same time, the increase in number of employees has resulted in higher compensation of employees which amounted to RM23.8 billion, rose by 3.6 per cent as against RM23.0 billion in the previous year.

In terms of turnover, Services sector remained dominant for the last 10 years and generated RM209.5 billion in 2019, with a contribution of 62.5 per cent. Affiliates abroad in Services sector were primarily engaged in Wholesale & retail trade and Financial activities. The second highest turnover was recorded by Manufacturing sector at RM81.0 billion, with a share of 24.2 per cent and were mainly in the sub-sector of Petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products.

As for the performance by country, the affiliates located in Indonesia posted the highest turnover at RM50.0 billion, principally in Financial activities. The second highest turnover was recorder by affiliates in Singapore which valued at RM39.2 billion, largely concentrated in Wholesale & retail trade activity. The United Kingdom, as the third highest contributor, recorded a turnover of RM38.1 billion mainly in Utilities and Wholesale & retail trade activities.
