HIGHLIGHTS

Sales  value  of   Wholesale & Retail Trade stood at RM90.1 billion in February 2017,  registering   8.3  per  cent  growth as compared  to the corresponding period in  2016.  The   sales    value    consists    of   Wholesale    Trade   ( RM44.1  billion),  Retail   Trade   (RM35.7  billion)  and  Motor  Vehicles (RM10.3 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by both Retail Trade (8.7%) and  Wholesale Trade  (8.5%) businesses.

The  volume  index    of   Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  rose   5.0   per  cent  to  146.3   points   in   February   2017  as  compared to February 2016.  The  growth  was  supported  by  the  increase  in  Retail  Trade  ( 6.0%),  Motor   Vehicles   (4.6%)   and  Wholesale   Trade  (4.2%).  The seasonally adjusted  volume  index   of   Wholesale   &   Retail Trade  increased   0.9 per cent as compared to the  preceding month.

Wholesale Trade Business

Sales  value   of  Wholesale Trade  business  registered   8.5 per cent growth   to   RM44.1 billion  as  compared   to  the corresponding   month   of   the    previous  year. On  a  monthly   basis,  sales  value  of  this  business  decreased  4.3 per cent.

The  volume  index  of   Wholesale  Trade   grew  4.2 per cent   to   152.2 points  in   February 2017  as  compared   to   February 2016.  Month-on-month, the volume  index of   Wholesale  Trade   (seasonally adjusted)   increased   0.5  per cent   as   against   the  previous   month.

Retail Trade Business

Retail   Trade   business   recorded   an   increase   in   sales   value  to   RM35.7 billion or  8.7 per cent  as  compared  to  last  year. Month-on-month, this   business dropped  1.1 per cent.

The   volume  index  of   Retail  Trade   rose   6.0  per  cent   to  152.2  points   in  February   2017   as compared to the same month  a   year   earlier.  Compared  to the  previous month, the seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  of  Retail Trade  went up  0.5 per cent.

Motor Vehicles Business

In  this month, sales value of  Motor  Vehicles  business  increased  5.8  per  cent to  RM10.3  billion  as  compared  to the same month of the preceding year. On a monthly basis, sales value  of Motor  Vehicles business  declined   9.1 per cent.

Year-on-year,  the volume index  of  Motor Vehicles  increased  4.6 per cent   to 116.5 points  in  February 2017. The seasonally adjusted volume  index of Motor  Vehicles went up  1.5 per cent in February 2017 as against January 2017.
