SALES VALUE OF WHOLESALE & RETAIL TRADE RECORDED RM108.9 BILLION
IN JANUARY 2019

HIGHLIGHTS

In the first month of 2019, sales of Wholesale & Retail Trade  expanded  7.8 per cent  compared  to  January  2018.  Retail  Trade sub-sector continued to be the main driver with  10.6 per cent year-on-year growth.

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose  7.9 per cent to 176.2 points as against the same month a year ago. The increase was mainly  attributed by  Retail  Trade  (11.2%).  Meanwhile, seasonally  adjusted  volume   index   increased   0.8 per cent   over  the preceding month.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale  Trade  generated  sales of  RM52.9 billion in January 2019, an  increase of    6.2 per cent as  compared  to  the  same  month  a  year  ago.  The increase  was  supported  by  Wholesale  of Household Goods, Other   Specialised  Wholesale and Wholesale  of   Food,   Beverages   and   Tobacco   which grew  7.6 per cent 7.3 per cent  and   6.3 per cent   respectively.  On  monthly  basis,  sales  of   this  sub-sector increased 0.2 per cent. Volume  index  of  Wholesale   Trade   rose   5.2 per cent to  181.7 points in January 2019 as compared to the same month of the preceding year. 

 Retail Trade 

Sales  of  Retail  Trade   recorded   10.6 per cent, a  double  digit   annual  growth  as   compared  to  the  same  period   of  the   previous  year.  The  expansion  was   propelled  by  Retail   Sale  in  Non-Specialised  Stores   (13.9%),   Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised Stores  (12.1%) and  Retail  Sale of Cultural  and  Recreation  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (11.6%). In  terms  of  volume  index,  Retail  Trade  also  recorded  a  double-digit  growth  of   11.2 per cent  to   188.0 points  in  January  2019.  As  for  seasonally  adjusted  index,  it decreased  0.2 per cent.  

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles rebounded to  4.8 per cent compared to January 2018 after contracting of 1.4 per cent a month ago. Month-on-month, sales value also rebounded to record 2.6 per cent. The higher sales were mainly contributed by clearance of 2018 stocks and strong demand for new models launched between December 2018 to January 2019. Volume   index  of  Motor  Vehicles  increased   5.6 per cent  to   131.5  points  compared  to  a  year  ago. For  month-on-month  comparison,  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index of this sub-sector rose  7.5 per cent.
