HIGHLIGHTS

Sales value of Wholesale & Retail Trade recorded a strong growth of  10.7 per cent to  RM96.9 billion in May 2017 as compared to  RM87.5 billion in 2016. The sales value consists of Wholesale Trade (RM46.9 billion), Retail Trade  (RM37.2 billion) and Motor Vehicles  (RM12.8 billion) businesses. The positive growth was contributed by Retail Trade (13.1%). 

The volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade rose  8.2 per cent to  156.6 points in May 2017 as compared to May 2016. The growth was supported by the increase in Retail Trade  (10.7%). The seasonally adjusted volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade increased  2.9 per cent as compared to the preceding month.

Wholesale Trade Business

Sales  value  of  Wholesale  Trade  business  registered   9.0  per  cent  growth  to   RM46.9 billion  as  compared  to  the  corresponding  month  of  the previous year. Month-on-month, sales value of this business increased  3.8 per cent.

The  volume  index  of  Wholesale  Trade  grew   6.1  per  cent  to   169.4  points  in  May  2017  as  compared  to  May  2016. Month-on-month, the volume index of Wholesale Trade (seasonally adjusted) increased  2.7 per cent as against the previous month.

Retail Trade Business

Retail  Trade  business  recorded  an  increase  in  sales  value  to   RM37.2  billion  or   13.1  per  cent  as  compared  to  last  year. Month-on-month, this business increased  2.7 per cent.

The volume index of Retail Trade rose  10.7 per cent to  153.2 points in May 2017 as compared to the same month a year earlier. Compared to April 2017, the seasonally adjusted volume index of Retail Trade went up  0.4 per cent.

Motor Vehicles Business

In this month, sales value of Motor Vehicles business increased  10.2 per cent to  RM12.8 billion  as compared to the same month of the preceding year. Sales value of Motor Vehicles business increased 12.8 per cent as compared to the previous month.

Year-on-year, the volume index of Motor Vehicles increased  7.9 per cent to  133.3 points in May 2017. The seasonally adjusted volume index of Motor Vehicles went up  15.0 per cent in May 2017 as against April 2017.
