Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance increased slightly in November 2015. The LI posted a growth of 0.1% to 118.5 points from 118.4 points in the previous month. The increase was propelled by Number of Housing Units Approved (0.6%) and Bursa Malaysia Industrial Index (0.1%). The annual change of LI decelerated to negative 0.7% in the reference month as against 0.3% in October 2015.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, rose 0.2% in November 2015. Real Contributions to EPF (0.2%) was the main contributor to the increase. However, the annual change of CI remained at 1.6% in the reference month.

The LI recorded a lower annual change as compared to the previous month. Meanwhile the annual growth of CI was unchanged. Both Diffusion Indexes reached above 50.0% for the first time since May 2015. This indicates that the economic growth will remain positive at a slower pace in the months ahead.
