Highlights
The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance increased 1.2% in March 2015. The LI was registered at 119.3 points in the reference month as against 117.9 points recorded in the previous month. Three components that recorded the highest percentage increase were Number of Housing Units Approved (0.8%), Real Money Supply, M1 (0.5%) and Number of New Companies Registered (0.4%). The annual change of LI leaped to 2.8% from 0.9% recorded in February 2015.
The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, also increased 0.5% in the reference month. The increase was driven by Real Contributions to EPF (0.5%) and Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing Sector (0.3%). The annual change of CI recorded a growth of 4.4% as compared to 2.9% in February 2015.
The annual change of LI and CI showed a favourable improvement in March 2015. Supported by both Diffusion Indexes above 50.0%, this implies that the Malaysian economy will continue expanding in the near term.
