Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance rose by 0.1% to 118.6 points in December 2015 compared to 118.5 points in the previous month. This increment was due to the increases in Expected Sales Value in Manufacturing Sector (0.3%), Real Imports of Semi Conductors (0.2%), Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (0.2%) and Number of New Companies Registered (0.1%). However, the annual change of LI continued to decrease by registering a negative growth of 1.2% in December 2015 from negative 0.7%  in the preceding month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, declined by 0.1% in December 2015 compared to the previous month. Among the CI components that recorded the notable decreases were Total Employment in Manufacturing Sector (-0.2%) and Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing Sector (-0.2%). The annual change of CI grew at 1.3% as against 1.6% in November 2015.

Both LI and CI posted a lower annual change as compared to the previous month. However, the Diffusion Index for LI remained at 57.1% while CI declined to 50.0%. This implies that the Malaysia’s economic expansion will continue at a slower pace in the near term.
