Malaysia’s Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) registered a lower net outflow amounting to RM40.6 billion in 2023 as against RM62.8 billion in the preceding year. The overall DIA position increased to RM664.4 billion from RM606.8 billion in previous year, while investment income lowered to RM41.1 billion as compared to RM53.7 billion in 2022.
Services sector became the largest contributor for DIA flows in 2023 primarily in Financial & insurance/takaful activities and Utilities. This was followed by Mining & quarrying sector as the second largest DIA outflows. Singapore, Indonesia and the USA were the main destinations of DIA flows in 2023.
In terms of position, the investment abroad surged to RM664.4 billion as at the end of 2023 whereby mostly in Services sector. This was followed by Mining & quarrying and Manufacturing sectors. Singapore, Indonesia and the Netherlands ranked as the top destinations of DIA position.
In terms of income, DIA registered a value of RM41.1 billion mainly driven by Services and Mining & quarrying sectors with a combine share 84.1 per cent of total income.
