Overview

INTRODUCTION

Population Projections, Malaysia, 2020-2060 present statistics on the number and structure of the population over a 40-year period following the implementation of the Population and Housing Census Malaysia 2020 (MyCensus 2020). The projections were developed based on the MyCensus 2020 using a bottom-up approach through the cohort component method based on current demography data and specific assumptions regarding patterns of live births, deaths, internal migration and international migration. Key population statistics are presented at Malaysia and state levels, according to demography characteristics such as sex, age group and ethnic group. Population projections is the main input used in comprehensive national planning and development at the national and international levels.

MAIN FINDINGS 

i.       Malaysia’s population is expected to continue increasing over the next 40 years reaching a peak of around 42.38 million in 2059 as compared to 32.45 million in 2020.

ii.      The population growth rate of Malaysia is projected to continue declining throughout the projection period reaching -0.03 per cent in 2060.

iii.     The population of Kelantan, Pahang, Perak, Terengganu and W.P. Putrajaya are projected to continue increasing over the 40 year period up to 2060.

iv.     11 states recorded to reach their peak population before Malaysia (2059), namely W.P. Kuala Lumpur (2029), Pulau Pinang (2040), W.P. Labuan (2042), Selangor (2049), Johor and Kedah (2052), Negeri Sembilan (2054), Perlis and Sarawak (2056).

v.      The percentage of the population aged 60 and over is expected to increase with Malaysia entering the Ageing Nation phase by 2050 (15.3%).

vi.     Perak is the first state reach Ageing Nation phase where 15 per cent of population aged 60 and over in 2025, followed by Pulau Pinang and Sarawak (2029).

vii.    The median age of the population is projected to reach 40.7 years in 2060, an increase of 11.0 years as compared to 2020 (29.7 years).

viii.   The composition of the old age population (65 years and over) is projected to nearly triple in 2060 as compared to 2020 (6.8%) to 18.3 per cent.

ix.     The total dependency ratio rise from 44.3 (2020) to 52.2 (2060).
