Malaysia natural rubber production decreased by 6.3 per cent in May 2022

The Department of Statistics, Malaysia released Monthly Rubber Statistics, Malaysia, May 2022. This publication consists of statistics on production, imports, exports, domestic consumption, stocks, prices, number of employees, salaries & wages and productivity of rubber estates.

Natural rubber production decreased by 6.3 per cent in May 2022 (21,073 tonnes) as compared to April 2022 (22,498 tonnes). Year-on-year comparison also showed that the production of natural rubber decreased by 25.2 per cent (May 2021: 28,164 tonnes). Production of natural rubber in May 2022 for Malaysia was mainly contributed by smallholders sector (83.3%) as compared to estates sector (16.7%).

Total stocks of natural rubber in May 2022 decreased by 2.8 per cent to 289,430 tonnes as compared to 297,654 tonnes in April 2022. Rubber processors factory contributed 92.7 per cent of the stocks followed by rubber consumers factory (7.2%) and rubber  estates (0.1%).

Exports of Malaysia's natural rubber amounted to 43,197 tonnes in May 2022, decreased 26.3 per cent as against April 2022 (58,596 tonnes). P.R. China remained as the main destination for natural rubber exports which accounted 44.6 per cent of total exports in May 2022 followed by the United States of America (12.4%), Turkey (4.5%), Brazil (4.4%) and Finland (3.7%). The exports performance was contributed by natural rubber-based product such as gloves, tyre, tube, rubber thread and condom. Gloves were the main exports of rubber-based products with a value of RM1.6 billion in May 2022, a decrease of 30.0 per cent as compared to April 2022 (RM2.2 billion).

Analysis of the average monthly price showed that Latex Concentrated recorded an  increase of 0.6 per cent (May 2022: 670.69 sen per kg, April 2022: 666.47 sen per kg) while, for type of Scrap decreased by 3.5 per cent (May 2022: 565.84 sen per kg, April 2022: 586.65 sen per kg). The movement of prices for all Standard Malaysian Rubber (S.M.R) is mixed with a decline between 2.2 to 2.3 per cent and increase up to   0.6 per cent. World Bank Commodity Price Data reported prices for TSR 20 (Technically Specified Rubber) and SGP/MYS (Singapore/Malaysia) decreased 5.0 per cent (from USD1.70/kg to USD1.62/kg) and 1.7 per cent (from USD2.09/kg to USD2.06/kg) respectively.
