Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance decreased slightly 0.1% in September 2016 to 117.2 points from 117.3 points in the previous month. This was influenced by the decreased in Number of New Companies Registered (-0.4%),  Real  Imports  of  Other Basic  Precious & Other Non-ferrous  Metal (-0.3%) and  Real  Money Supply,  M1 (-0.1%). The annual change of LI declined 0.9% as compared with the increase of 0.1% in the last month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, rose in September 2016. The CI increased to 1.1%, propelled mainly by Volume Index of Retail Trade (0.5%). The annual change of CI grew 3.0% in the reference month from 2.4% in August 2016.

The LI recorded a lower annual change as compared to the previous month. Conversely, the annual change of CI improved in the reference month. The Diffusion Index for LI was below 50.0% while the Diffusion Index for CI reached 83.3%. This implies that the Malaysian economy will continue to expand at a slower rate in the near term.
