Information & Communication Technology and e-commerce contribute 23.5 per cent to GDP in 2023
GVAICT accounted RM252.0 billion recorded a growth of 3.8 per cent as compared to 11.4 per cent in the preceding year, supported by ICT services, contributing to 41.6 per cent. This is followed by ICT manufacturing, ICT trade and content media with a share of 38.2 per cent, 14.2 per cent and 6.0 per cent respectively.
Gross Value Added of e-commerce amounted RM248.2 billion, with a slower growth of 3.7 per cent as compared to 19.2 per cent in the preceding year. The contribution of e-commerce to GDP recorded 13.6 per cent, with the Manufacturing sector remained the main contributor at 51.8 per cent, followed by the Services sector at 45.2 percent. Meanwhile the remaining contributions come from the Mining & Quarrying, Agriculture, and Construction sectors.
Exports of ICT products contributed 34.5 per cent to the Malaysia’s exports, valued at RM430.7 billion in 2023 dominated by ICT goods with the share of 90.9 per cent.
Imports of ICT products recorded a contribution of 23.4 per cent to national imports with a value of RM270.7 billion, contributed by the ICT goods with the share of 84.3 per cent.
Employment in the ICT industry increased by 1.6 per cent to 1.24 million persons in 2023 with contribution of 7.8 per cent to the overall employment in Malaysia. The employment was dominated by ICT manufacturing at 35.6 per cent, followed by ICT services and ICT trade with a share of 29.2 per cent and 22.4 per cent respectively.
