MALAYSIA'S   WHOLESALE   &   RETAIL   TRADE   JUMPED   15.2   PER   CENT   IN   APRIL   TO   RECORD   RM128.0 BILLION, DRIVEN BY HARI RAYA CELEBRATION AND THE INCREASE IN ONLINE PURCHASES

HIGHLIGHTS

Sales    value    of    Wholesale    &    Retail   Trade    recorded    RM128.0   billion    in    April   2022,  registered    a    growth    of  15.2 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was     contributed by all sub-sectors, namely Retail Trade  20.9 per cent, Wholesale Trade  11.5 per cent and  Motor Vehicles  11.3 per cent.

In   terms   of   volume   index,   Wholesale   &   Retail   Trade  registered  a  growth  of   10.0  per  cent  year-on-year  to  record  140.6 points. The  increment  was  supported  by  the  increase  of  Retail  Trade  16.6  per  cent,  Motor   Vehicles   7.2  per  cent and  Wholesale  Trade    3.3 per cent. As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it went up   7.9 per cent month-on-month in April 2022.

Wholesale Trade

Wholesale Trade generated sales value of  RM59.0 billion in April 2022 with a growth of  11.5 per cent as against April 2021. This increase was attributed to Wholesale of Household Goods  22.9 per cent, Wholesale  of  Agricultural  Raw Materials  &  Live  Animals  14.9 per cent,   and  Wholesale  of  Food,  Beverages  &  Tobacco   11.8 per cent  as  compared  to  the  previous  year. For  monthly  comparison,  sales  of  this  sub-sector rose  3.1 per cent.

Volume index of Wholesale Trade registered   130.6 points, expanded  3.3 per cent year-on-year. The positive growth was recorded in Wholesale of Household Goods (19.6%), Wholesale of Machinery, Equipment & Supplies (6.9%), and Wholesale of Food, Beverages & Tobacco (3.8%). Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index increased   5.2 per cent month-on-month.

Retail Trade 

Sales of Retail Trade registered a growth of  20.9 per cent as compared to April 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this expansion  were  Retail  Sale  of  Automotive  Fuel  in  Specialised  Stores  (37.7%),  Retail  Trade  Not  in  Stores,  Stalls  or  Markets  (28.6%), and Retail Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores (26.4%). Compared with March 2022, sales of this sub-sector went up  7.4 per cent.

Volume Index of Retail Trade recorded a growth of  16.6 per cent to  157.3 points as compared to April 2021. Among the groups that contributed to this growth were Retail Sale of Automotive Fuel in Specialised Stores (31.2%), Retail Sale in Non-specialised Stores  (26.0%), Retail  Trade   Not   in   Stores,  Stalls  or  Markets  (25.8%),  Retail  Sale  of  Other  Goods  in  Specialised  Stores  (17.7%) and Retail Sale of Cultural & Recreation Goods in Specialised Stores (17.0%). As for seasonally adjusted volume index, it rose  13.6 per cent as against March 2022.

Motor Vehicles

Sales value of Motor Vehicles sub-sector registered a positive growth of  11.3 per cent year-on-year. The increase was attributed to Maintenance & Repair of  Motor  Vehicles    33.8  per  cent and Sale of Motor Vehicles Parts & Accessories  31.1  per  cent in April 2022. On  a  monthly  basis,  sales  of  this  sub-sector dropped  7.7 per cent.

The volume index of Motor Vehicles increased  7.2 per cent year-on-year to reach  121.1 points. The increase was attributed to Sale  of  Motor  Vehicles  Parts  &  Accessories  (27.8%)  and  Maintenance  &  Repair  of  Motor  Vehicles  (24.7%).  Seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  for  this  sub-sector increased  10.7 per cent month-on-month.
