Overview

Foreign affiliates in Malaysia contributed for 17.7 per cent to the Malaysia’s economy, recorded a value added of RM274.3 billion in 2021

A total of 2,987 foreign affiliates operating in Malaysia have generated a value added at RM274.3 billion in 2021, increased by 13.8 per cent as compared to RM241.0 billion in the previous year. Manufacturing remained as the main contributing sector with a value added of RM133.3 billion, followed by Mining & quarrying and Services sectors. 

Foreign affiliates in Malaysia employed 884,843 persons, expanded by 2.9 per cent with paid compensation of employees rose from RM48.7 billion to RM51.9 billion in 2021.

Both exports and imports of foreign affiliates in Malaysia in 2021 expanded by 27.8 per cent and 21.1 per cent, respectively. Exports of Inward FATS contributed to 33.9 per cent of the trade of goods & services, while imports of Inward FATS accounted for 32.3 per cent.

The foreign affiliates in Malaysia were mainly from the Asia region with 1,897 affiliates as compared to 1,898 affiliates in 2020, followed by Europe and Americas regions with 625 and 401 affiliates, respectively.
