Foreign affiliates contributed 17.4 per cent to Malaysia’s economy in 2018
In 2018, foreign affiliates contributed 17.4 per cent to Malaysia’s economy with a value added of RM252.5 billion, generated by 2,982 foreign affiliates in Malaysia. Manufacturing sector remained as the largest contributor with a share of 45.3 per cent of total value added, followed by Mining & quarrying sector at 28.1 per cent.
Foreign affiliates employed 858,172 persons with paid compensation of employees amounting to RM48.4 billion. The highest number of employees was involved in Manufacturing sector at 649,700 persons with RM33.1 billion of compensation of employees in 2018. Services sector with 164,188 persons of employees paid RM11.1 billion of compensation of employees and was the second largest contributor.
Exports of foreign affiliates recorded RM306.2 billion which contributed 30.8 per cent to the total Malaysia’s export of goods and services in 2018. Meanwhile, imports registered RM272.3 billion with a share of 30.5 per cent over Malaysia’s import of goods and services. Both exports and imports were mainly from Manufacturing sector.
