Overview

Domestic Tourism Performance for All States in Malaysia Decreased Significantly in 2020

This report is published to provide statistics on domestic tourism at state level.The statistics reported are based on the Domestic Tourism Survey conducted in 2020. Amongst the key statistics included in this report are the number of visitors, total receipts, number of trips and average length of stay. Besides, the report also presents statistics on travelling patterns such as main destinations visited, mode of transport and type of accommodation. In addition, statistics on social & demographic profiles of domestic visitors by age group, ethnic group, educational level, household income class and employment status are also displayed in the publication.

Overall, domestic tourism performance in Malaysia for 2020 declined significantly in visitor arrivals and total expenditure with -44.9 per cent and -60.8 per cent, respectively. Performance for all states contracted in terms of volume and value due to the implementation of the COVID-19 lockdown. In 2020, Selangor’s domestic visitor expenditure receipt was RM7.1 billion, a decline of -52.8 per cent from the previous year. W.P. Kuala Lumpur recorded RM5.3 billion, decreased -57.8 per cent. Also registered a significant decline was Sarawak which fell -61.0 per cent to RM3.4 billion. Other states that recorded notable decline were Perak -61.5 per cent (RM3.3 billion) and Pahang -64.1 per cent (RM2.7 billion).

 

 

In terms of domestic visitor arrivals, Selangor recorded 19.7 million visitors, dropped -41.3 per cent as against to previous year. Meanwhile, Perak and W.P. Kuala Lumpur fell -37.5 per cent and -45.1 per cent, respectively. Sabah and Kedah also recorded significant fall of -53.1 per cent and -31.8 per cent to register 10.3 million and 10.1 million domestic visitors in 2020.
