Manufacturing sales rose 4.5 per cent in December 2020,
the highest growth since March 2020

Malaysia’s Manufacturing sales in December 2020 stood at RM124.6 billion, grew 4.5 per cent as compared to previous year. The rise in sales  value  in  December 2020  was  driven by  the  increase  in  Transport  Equipment  &  Other  Manufactures  Products  (20.5%), Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (7.9%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (4.2%). Meanwhile, on month-on-month basis, the sales value increased 3.9 per cent.

Total employees engaged in the Manufacturing sector in December 2020 was 2,199,195 persons, a decrease of 2.0 per cent as compared to 2,243,788 persons in December 2019. Salaries & wages paid amounted to RM7,770.7 million, dropped by 0.8 per cent or RM59.7 million in December 2020 as against the same month of the preceding year.

The sales value per employee rose by 6.7 per cent to record RM56,644 as compared with the same month in 2019. Meanwhile, the average salaries & wages per employee was RM3,533 in December 2020.

In the fourth quarter 2020, the sales value of the Manufacturing sector grew 3.0 per cent to RM366.4 billion as compared to the same quarter of the previous year.  The increase was  driven by Transport Equipment & Other Manufactures Products  (15.0%), Food, Beverages & Tobacco Products (9.0%) and Electrical & Electronics Products (4.3%). The number of employees and salaries & wages dropped 2.0 per cent and 1.2 per cent respectively in the fourth quarter 2020.

In summary for 2020, the sales value of the Manufacturing sector registered a decrease of 2.1 per cent to RM1,346.6 billion as compared to the same period of 2019. The number of employees engaged during the period declined by 2.0 per cent to register 2,199,195 persons while salaries & wages paid decreased by
1.1 per cent to RM87.2 billion. The sales value per employee during the reference period contracted by 0.2 per cent to record RM612,324.
