Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Going forward, the Leading Index indicates that the economy will remain growing

Malaysia’s Leading Index (LI) for June 2019 registered 117.6 points, down 0.3 per cent from a month earlier following negative 1.7 per cent in May 2019. The monthly growth remained negative due to the decrease in four of the LI components. On a yearly basis, the LI fell further for the second consecutive months to negative 0.8 per cent in June 2019 after having a positive growth of 0.3 per cent in April 2019. Thus, the LI indicates that the future economic direction will remain growing in October to December 2019.

The annual change of Coincident Index (CI) as reflection of the current economic performance, stood positive with a growth of 1.9 per cent in June 2019. Subsequently, the monthly change declined 0.2 per cent in the reference month propped mainly by the decreased in Capacity Utilisation in Manufacturing sector (-0.7%).

The Diffusion Index for LI was surged to 57.1 per cent, indicates that four out of the total components of LI rose in June 2019 as compared to the performance in six months back. Concurrently, the Diffusion Index for CI reached 50.0 per cent.
