Malaysian Economic Indicators: Leading, Coincident & Lagging Indexes

Overview

Highlights

The Leading Index (LI) which monitors the economic performance in advance increased in June 2015. The LI rose by 0.3% to 117.6 points from 117.2 points in May 2015. The components that contributed to the increase were Real Imports of Other Basic Precious & Other Non-ferrous Metal (0.8%), Number of New Companies Registered (0.3%), Real Money Supply, M1 (0.2%) and Real Imports of Semi Conductors (0.2%). The annual change of LI leaped to 0.8% from negative 0.2% in the previous month.

The Coincident Index (CI) which measures the current economic activity, grew by 0.5% in the reference month. This was due to the increases in Real Contributions to EPF (0.5%) and Real Salaries & Wages in Manufacturing Sector (0.2%). The annual change of CI grew slower to 1.2% as compared to 1.5% in May 2015.

Even though the level of Diffusion Index for LI remains below 50.0%, the annual change of LI and CI showed a favourable growth in June 2015. This indicates that the Malaysian economy will continue to expand at a slower rate in the near term.
